Back to Childhood for the Day at Mendon Town Beach
A beautiful summer morning with nowhere to be. This is not a typical occurrence this summer, as the weather has been less than ideal for swimming or enjoying a day at a local beach and our schedule has been pretty packed with trips as well other engagements. After throwing around a few ideas with a friend, her suggestion won, the Mendon Town Beach. We packed our lunches, sand toys, boogie boards (which were not allowed, so leave those home) and put on our bathing suits. This beach is located on an unassuming short road in the town of Mendon, Massachusetts.
The small parking lot is across the street from the quaint beach on the lake of Nipmuc Pond. After crossing this quiet road, you are greeted by the snack shack where you pay a small admission fee- for us $5.00 per person since we are not Mendon residents. This snack shack has many reasonably priced goodies, from cheeseburgers to ice cream treats. There are tables for picnics and two levels of sandy areas for the kiddos to dig or to sit in a beach chair and relax.
The clear waters of the Nipmuc Pond were inviting enough for me to dip my toes in, as I am admittingly not a fan of lake water. The kids dove right in, swimming to a close dock for them to sit on and relax and do a few jumps off and easily swim back to shore. Watching the fish and finding freshwater snails were absolutely a highlight of this close to home adventure. Lucky for my daughters, our good friend was happy to swim with them to a dock that is deeper which provided them with countless cannonballs.
After much begging to go to the playground, we crossed back over Taft Avenue and visited a beautiful, shady playground that could entertain for hours. Different structures provide an awesome challenge for varying age groups. Yet somehow, even with those amazing play structures, we turn to find the kids....in the woods.... playing with rocks...and stumps- a beautiful sight that I will always value.
This lake beach provided such a relaxing day for us. Even though I had never visited before, it felt like a childhood memory- a basic, simple summer day.
